EASPD is taking part to the 7th Session of the Conference of State Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) that is taking place in New York from 10th to 12th of June. This important conference is organised annually by the United Nations to monitor the implementation of the convention and of its provisions on the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PwD). The conference is attended by the signatory states' delegations, together with the UN bodies and numerous associations and NGOs representing the civil society. Since its accreditation last year, it is the first time that EASPD has the chance to be part of the debates and present its expertise in social service provision for persons with disabilities.
Our participation is motivated by the belief that service providers have a crucial role to play in enabling human rights and that their contribution is key to implement the UN CRPD. This opportunity is inspiring and important to stress a number of key messages that are at the core of EASPD’s daily actions and work. Our organisation thinks that services for persons with disabilities should:
- Be accessible, affordable, available and adaptable – not just for PwD but also for the whole community
- Be designed on individual needs –also through a co-production process to be conducted together with PwD
- Be inclusive and community-based.
EASPD strongly believes that quality user-led services are essential to fulfil the obligations of the UN CRPD and ultimately to ensure the full enjoyment of persons with disabilities’ rights.
