IMF’s recent study calls for Social Investment to tackle inequalities

In June 2015, the International Monetary Fund issued a Staff Discussion Note named: “Causes and Consequences of Income Inequality: A Global perspective”. Whilst at first sight it may appear as not particularly linked to support services for persons with disabilities due to its focus on income inequality, the European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities nonetheless believes that it leads to interesting conclusions for our sector, for instance that current EU fiscal and economic policies are failing to address the importance of investing in the human capital and skills of many Europeans. 2015 CSRs are a missed opportunity for the European Commission to promote De-Institutionalisation

On the 15th June 2015, in the framework of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, policy makers and experts will come together in Riga to discuss de-institutionalisation (DI). In view of this timely event, the European Expert Group wishes to reiterate the importance of promoting DI in all European policies and financial instruments. Read more
 

EASPD in New York: co-production is a powerful tool to implement the CRPD

During the 8th session of the Conference of States Parties to the UN CRPD in New York, the European Association of Service providers for Persons with Disabilities (EASPD) organised a side event in cooperation with the European Commission. Debating on co-production, participants agreed that cooperation across sectors is essential to apply values such as freedom, choice and control of life and stressed that society needs to prepare for the fundamental change. EASPD urges the European Union to self-evaluate how co-production is reflected in existing legal frameworks

Commitment, structural collaboration, mutual respect, willingness to make progress, better choice, autonomy and advocacy. All these elements are essential to comply with the principles set forth in the UN Convention and to implement co-production, which is an inclusive working practice between experts by experience (users) and organisations being of support. EASPD organised a Hearing in the European Parliament with key stakeholders to exchange the best way to develop co-production processes in Europe and warned that the existing EU and national legal frameworks do not always follow the realities and needs on the ground. FRA launches Human Rights indicators on article 19 CRPD

The European Union's Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) has launched for the first time Human Rights indicators on article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities (CRPD). These indicators result from their research project on the transition from institutional care to community based support for persons with disabilities. Read more

On  18-19  May,  Eurodiaconia,  ENSIE  and  EASPD  held  a seminar  on  "Work  Integration  Social Enterprises" in Brussels. Read more
 

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Dutch Government’s Human Rights Tulip Award

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the Dutch Government organizes a grants award program every year to provide funding of up to 100,000 euro to courageous organizations or individuals promoting human rights in innovative ways. Nominations are possible from 15th June to 15th July 2015. Read more
 

ZERO PROJECT 2016: Call for Nominations on Inclusive Education and ICT

The call for Nominations for ZERO PROJECT 2016 is open until the 10th of July. In 2016 the Zero Project will nominate innovative practices and innovative policies concerning INCLUSIVE EDUCATION and / or ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Read more
 

Access City Award 2016 announced

The European Commission has announced the sixth edition of the Access City Award - The European Prize for making cities more accessible to people with disabilities and older people. The deadline for submissions is the 10th September 2015. Read more

UPCOMING EVENTS

17-18 September. 'Play, Learn, Grow’: Training on Early Intervention

The training course aims to develop the understanding and expertise of teachers, trainers, headmasters and staff on early intervention for persons with disabilities. The course provides a certificate delivered by a European training organisation. Read more
 

22 – 23 October. EASPD International Salzburg Conference

Each educational framework and each learning environment is unique, and it is difficult to develop a common strategy on how to develop an inclusive education. EASPD, in cooperation with the projects EQF meets ECVET, INVESTT and TIDE, will showcase a selection of best practices in developing inclusive teaching programmes for persons with disabilities.
