On 11th-13th June EASPD will attend the 12th session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in New York, where they will join key stakeholders to take stock of the implementation of the UN CRPD around the world. On 11th June EASPD will also co-host a side-event, which will explore the links between disability and ageing, existing and needed services and will discuss key issues at stake as well as innovative models of support put in place at national level.
Held each year the overarching theme of this year’s COSP is "Ensuring the inclusion of persons with disabilities in a changing world through the implementation of the CRPD." The conference will address three further sub themes through various roundtables and side events:
- Technology, digitalization and ICTs for the empowerment and inclusion of persons with disabilities
- Social inclusion and the right of the highest attainable standard of health
- Inclusion of persons with disabilities in society through participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure and sports
Joining the European Commission, the World Health Organisation, the European Disability Forum, Agenzija Sapport and the Swedish Agency for Participation EASPD will host its side event, ‘Disability and ageing: shaping the agenda of tomorrow’ at 11:30am-12:45pm in Conference Rooms C.
As persons with disabilities get older and older persons form the larger cohort of persons with disabilities, challenges to enjoy the right to independent leaving remain, despite efforts for deinstitutionalisation the links between aging and disability are growing ever more pressing.
EASPD’s side event will explore the key challenges that the support services sector faces in responding to the demands placed upon them by our aging populations and to also ensure the continued implementation of the UNCPD and community-based services.
