EASPD Social Services Week

Everyday thousands of service providers work in their communities to support the needs of persons with disabilities and empower them to fully participate in society. Through the delivery of high-quality, personalised support, these services contribute to the full implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD); promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in their community and also help to provide choice and options to these people’s families and friends, who are otherwise relied on to provide informal care and support. Such services are the engine of the European social model and not only hold the key for millions of people be able to have equal access to their human and social rights, but also provide jobs to the 11 million professionals working in the sector and contribute to the development of more suitable and resilient economies.

In short, social services are essential services.

Despite the important role that these services play in our societies, their work is too often left unrecognised and for too long support services for persons with disabilities have not received the resources or funding they need to fulfil their potential. The COVID-19 pandemic has tested the sector and highlighted the role of social services as essential services. These services have worked quickly, proving their adaptability and innovativeness to continue to deliver quality support to those who need it, but the pandemic has exacerbated the current challenges of the sector which until now have been largely ignored by policy makers and authorities.

Held between 7th-11th December 2020EASPD’s Social Services Week will showcase the diversity of support services providers for persons with disabilities and the vital work they do in their communities. Across a number of online events, EASPD will bring together support service providers, persons with disabilities, European Policy makers and other leading experts in the field to discuss how the European Union can better support service providers for persons with disabilities, both now and in the future.
