European Parliament in defence of rights of people with intellectual disabilities and their families in times of Covid-19 emergency

On 8th July the European Parliament "approved a motion for resolution on the rights of persons with intellectual disabilities in the Covid-19 crisis", following a petition launched by Inclusion Europe. This initiative came as a result of the discrimination that persons with disabilities and their families faced when seeking medical help because of Covid-19: many were confronted with discriminatory triage guidelines and there were even instances where ambulances did not show up after being called for persons with disabilities.
The health crisis we have been living in has made it clear that the European Union needs to invest in creating a safer social union to safeguard citizens with and without special needs; plus, it is also necessary to investigate the abusive procedures and behaviours that persons with disabilities and their families have experienced, and make the principles listed in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities a reality.
