“Thanks to the support they are integrated in the community and enjoy the quality of life and autonomy they wish.”

Plataforma Educativa is made of 10 social enterprises with close to 500 professionals serving to the social integration and economic development of the community. It is a non-profit organization, dedicated to social education since 1994. It focuses primarily on people at risk of social exclusion.
The platform manages a service called “Support to Autonomy”. This Service aims at improving the quality of life of people with disabilities and/or mental health issues, by promoting their full inclusion in society whilst achieving their highest level of dignity, respect, self-esteem and wellbeing.

Types of support provided

We offer guidance and support to people with intellectual disabilities and/or mental health issues that have specific issues.  These people may live alone, in pairs or with other people (with a maximum of 4) and may require support related to autonomy, physical and material well-being, interpersonal relationships, personal development and social inclusion.
We work on the basis of objectives (welfare, educational, etc.) that are developed and prioritized, together with the user, and which can also be flexibly modified upon the user’s requests. We review these objectives and tasks together with the user at least every 6 months and we evaluate them on a monthly basis.

The areas in which the service intervenes are:

  • On an everyday level and home habits
  • Health
  • Workplace
  • Finances management Personal development
  • Leisure time

Who receives the support?

The conditions depend on the criteria established by the public administration, which can vary each year. Some criteria that have been maintained throughout the years are:

  • Users must have been declared with a minimum of 33% of disability
  • Users must have a certified degree of dependency needs

The necessity of the support

The service enables people with intellectual disabilities or mental disorders to live independently.
Thanks to the support they are integrated in the community and enjoy the quality of life and autonomy they wish.

Key elements

- Ongoing coordination among the network of professionals: The user is accompanied by several professionals, who coordinate their decisions in order to reach the common goal set by the user.
- Training of the team: The service promotes the progressive and ongoing learning of the professionals in all the areas covering community care.

- Teamwork: ongoing assessment of the situation and adjustment of the support provided bearing in mind the autonomy of the person.
- Sharing the same theoretical basis: The service is based on person-centered planning. The user sets the goals and the achievements to be reached. The professionals bring support while always respecting the will of the user.

Potential enhancements

  • Prioritize this service in the national budget; the current economic crisis has caused budgetary cuts that have diminished the quality of the services.
  • Improve and facilitate the access to the service, which currently depends on specific calls and deadlines. This causes that often people cannot access the service.
  • Strengthen the participation of the users in the preparation of their work plans.
  • Extend the active participation of the users in the service and its organization.

Highlight: Respect of the will of the user who sets the objectives he wishes to reach. The support service is based on person-centered planning.
