20th April, European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels
The “Towards Inclusive Development Education: It’s Our World Too” is set within the framework of supporting people with an intellectual disability to become active global citizens and engage in key development issues with policy-makers. The Towards Inclusive Development Education (TIDE) project aims at precisely this; supporting people with an intellectual disability to develop their own understanding and views on subjects such as eradicating poverty and hunger, the right to education, gender equality worldwide, environmental sustainability and the global partnership for development.
As part of this process, the self-advocates have produced a manifesto bringing together their main beliefs on these areas, as well as the necessity to include all citizens in the development debates. It is clear that this is often not the case. This hearing will aim at providing the self-advocates with a platform in order for them to exchange their views and perspectives with European policy-makers working in the field of Development.
Another aspect of this event will be to bring together experts in the field of inclusive education in order to present and discuss what possibly could be done to make sure inclusion is an essential aspect of any work on Development issues.
