Vacancy: Policy Officer at EASPD

EASPD is looking for an experienced Policy Officer to join us at its headquarters in Brussels. The Policy Officer will work in close cooperation with EASPD’s Policy team, led by the Policy Manager. The officer will play a key role in our lobbying and advocacy actions at European and International level. The work will involve covering a broad variety of topics linked to human rights and social services.

Overview of duties: 

Under the supervision of the Policy Manager, the Policy Officer will lead EASPD’s Policy work, in areas such as

  • services for children with disabilities and their families; primarily early childhood intervention and education. This includes the upcoming EU Child Strategy and Child Guarantee.
  • the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This includes the next European Disability Strategy
  • Other topics will arise

 This will include the following tasks:

  • Monitoring of European Union legislative activities, primarily in the aforementioned issues
  • Preparation of relevant position papers, briefings and reports, primarily on the aforementioned issues.
  • Representation of EASPD in external coalitions, meetings and events, primarily in Brussels but also internationally. This includes public speaking and engagement with European Union officials. External coalitions include the Social Platform, the European Alliance for Investing in Children and others.
  • Planning and organisation of policy events and meetings (including online) in Brussels, including in European Institutions, and across Europe.
  • Engagement with EASPD members, including through the facilitation of the Interest Group on Early Childhood Intervention and support to the Standing Committee on Education.

 Other tasks will include :

  • EU Project Management activities. Each EASPD staff member is usually involved in at least one European project, either as Coordinator or as simple partner. This could include the ECI Agora project.
  • The officer will be expected to perform some office and administrative duties, as assigned by the Policy Manager. This is expected from each EASPD staff member

Profile

Essential:
  • Fluent written and spoken English;
  • Min. 4 year experience in a Policy-related position, at European and/or national level;
  • Significant knowledge of EU policy-making process and upcoming legislation in the social field;
  • Knowledge of social service provision and relevant issues, including from a European perspective;
  • Proactive, problem-solving and dynamic attitude;
  • Ability to work with others, under pressure and respect deadlines;
  • Previous experience in events and European project management;
  • Computer literacy, especially a very good command of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point)
 Desired: 
  • Knowledge of issues of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) and affecting children with disabilities and their families;
  • Undergraduate Degree in Politics, International Relations, European Affairs, Law, Sociology, Business studies
  • Fluent written and spoken in another EU language would be a major asset;
  • Previous experience in an NGO;
  • Negotiation skills with service providers and venues

Terms of the contract

  • The selected person must have a valid permit to work in the EU
  • The workstation is the EASPD headquarters in Brussels (BE)
  • Open-end contract of 38 hours per week; remuneration according to Belgian legislation; PC 329 (Social Sector) and dependent on experience
  • Starting date: (preferably) as soon as possible
